โฐ Prepare it the night before for hassle-free baking and a deliciously custardy, golden breakfast ready to enjoy.

  • Total Time: 8 hours 45 minutes to 10 hours 45 minutes
  • Yield: 8 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale

6 tablespoons butter

3/4 cup packed light or dark brown sugar

2 tablespoons pure maple syrup, corn syrup, or pancake syrup

6 to 8 slices French bread, 1-inch thick, cut into 3/4-inch cubes

4 large eggs

1 cup half-and-half

1 tablespoon vanilla extract

1/4 teaspoon salt

Sweetened whipped cream and fresh strawberries or raspberries for serving

Instructions

1- First, melt the butter, brown sugar, and maple syrup in a microwave or on the stove until smooth, then spread it evenly in a greased 9ร—13-inch baking pan.

2- Next, arrange your bread cubes in a single layer over this caramel mix for even soaking.

3- In a bowl, whisk the eggs, half-and-half, vanilla extract, and salt together, then pour it over the bread to let it absorb all the goodness.

4- Cover and pop it in the fridge for 8 to 10 hours so the flavors meld just right.

5- When you’re ready, place the covered pan in a cold oven and preheat to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

6- Bake for 30 to 35 minutes until golden and bubbly, and for extra caramel goodness, flip the pieces halfway through.

7- Serve it warm with whipped cream and fresh berries for a fresh twist.

Notes

๐Ÿž Use soft French bread with a thin crust; remove thick crusts from artisan bread for best texture.
๐Ÿฅš Maintain a balanced milk-to-egg ratio and keep bread mostly in a single layer to avoid sogginess.
๐Ÿ”„ Flip bread halfway through baking to ensure caramel coverage on both sides for extra richness.
