๐Ÿฝ๏ธ Master the art of homemade Salisbury steak with this foolproof recipe that brings restaurant-quality comfort food to your dinner table in under an hour

  • Total Time: 40 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale

1 pound (about 454 grams) lean ground beef

1/4 cup panko breadcrumbs

1 large egg, beaten

2 teaspoons ketchup

1 teaspoon Dijon mustard

1/2 teaspoon dried oregano

1 teaspoon kosher salt

1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil for cooking

2 tablespoons unsalted butter

2 tablespoons flour

1 1/2 cups beef stock

1 tablespoon ketchup

1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

1/2 teaspoon onion powder

6 ounces (about 170 grams) sliced cremini mushrooms

Salt and pepper to taste

Mashed potatoes

Broccoli, green beans, or rice pilaf

Instructions

1-In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, beaten egg, ketchup, Dijon mustard, dried oregano, and salt until well mixed.

2-Form the mixture into four equal oval-shaped patties, each about 3/4-inch thick.

3-Heat the olive oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add the patties and cook for approximately 3 minutes on each side until a golden crust forms. Remove patties and place them on a plate.

4-Reduce the heat to medium and add the butter to the same skillet with the drippings. Once melted, whisk in the flour until smooth and lump-free.

5-Lower the heat to medium-low and gradually whisk in the beef stock, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, and onion powder.

6-Add the sliced mushrooms and simmer the gravy for about 5 minutes until it thickens. Season with salt and pepper.

7-Return the patties to the skillet, nestle them into the gravy, cover, and cook for an additional 10 minutes until the internal temperature reaches 160ยฐF (71ยฐC).

8-Serve the Salisbury steaks with the mushroom gravy spooned on top over mashed potatoes, accompanied by optional vegetables or rice pilaf.

Notes

๐Ÿฅฉ Use the drippings from the browned patties to enhance the gravy flavor – this is where the deep, rich taste comes from
๐Ÿ„ For extra flavor, sautรฉ onions with the mushrooms or add garlic powder to the gravy mixture
โฐ Don’t overcook the patties – they should reach 160ยฐF but still remain juicy and tender
